Learning Magazine Conventions

I learned the conventions of a magazine through the help of my teacher providing us with a labeled example of a magazine that contained all of the conventions along with a PowerPoint lesson which we took notes on and review to reinforce our understanding of the conventions of a magazine and the different genres of magazines such as, sports magazine, travel magazine, and gossip magazine. 

Genre I Chose

I chose a travel and fashion magazine for my product; I used a picture of my mother I took on a vacation a couple years back. I originally found the photo in my phone gallery while searching for sports related pictures to make a sports magazine cover, but I was inspired by the photo, so I pivoted it to a travel and fashion magazine. The cover shows a tourist hotel and a woman posing along with a coverline relating to fashion clearly conveying the travel and fashion genre. 

Magazine Conventions

To confine to the conventions of a fashion and travel magazine I made my masthead french which is the leading country of luxury fashion, the font is an elegant looking cursive to appeal to that luxury look. Regarding the cover photo it appeals to the fashion conventions as it shows a woman posing with a handbag next to her and shows a scenic hotel in the background appealing to conventions of a travel magazine. Additionally, all of the coverlines have topics relating to travel and fashion.

Challenges and Successes

Some challeges I faced while making my magazine cover are that I had a difficult time picking my genre as I had to find a good cover photo to convey my genre and my inicial choice of a sports magazine was difficult convey with pictures ive taken, then I found a picture of my mother and changed to travel and fashion magazine. Another challenge was adding text and recoloring it inside of InDesign which confused me and set me back until I was finally able to figure out the software. Apart from that the rest of the creation process went smooth so I count that as a success.

Important Takeaways

This process helped me to learn a new software incase I want to utilize it for my portfolio, and helped me work on creativity by having to find a good cover photo that conveys a genre in a cohesive manner. Additionally helped my patience by making me adjust to the learning curve of using the features of InDesign.

Effect In Portfolio Project

This project might help me in my overall portfolio by showing how to be creative and have a good work ethic to create a high quality product, although I do not plan on using InDesign it is good to learn in case I do need to use it.
